Can my landlord legally do this?

I went on an extended vacation for four months. A friend was collecting my mail while I was away. My landlord decided the unit (in Ontario, Canada) was abandoned and decided to remove some of my possessions as well as changing the locks. The landlord would not allow me access to remove my possessions unless I wrote a letter stating the unit had been abandoned. When can a landlord legally declare a rental unit as being abandoned even though the utilities and rent are still being paid on time? Do I have just cause to file a suit against the landlord?
yes, file a lawsuit
I am not familiar with the laws in canada but that is not legal in the united states unless in canada you must be there in a period of time to make sure there are no fire hazards and things like that
Though I do not live in Canada, I can’t imagine this being legal if the rent and utilities are being paid as they should be. You also had a friend picking up the mail and checking on the property. If this is legal in Canada, you guys need some new legislation.
yea u have a case
Wow, that’s nuts! He decided it was abandoned despite rent and utilities being paid? Then tried to make you say it was abandoned, as well! You didn’t actually write that one, did you? The idiot had the best renter ever; on time payer and no wear and tear! There has got to be a megaton of crap you could do to this guy! Get a lawyer and tear him a new one!
Can you tell; this one’s got me steamin’ – unbelievable! Are you living there, yet?
