Do I need a passport to re-enter the United States from Canada by land?

I know a lot of questions about this have been asked and so far I have learned no I do not need one to get into Canada..but I haven’t figured out of I need one to get back home. By CAR. I’m taking a vacation to Niagara Falls Canada in August 2007. I have a passport but my boyfriend doesn’t and he doesn’t want one.

Further more my aunt said according to the news this morning there is a glitch in the system with the over flow of passports and so they arn’t going to be relying on them as much until September..if you know anything about this could you fill me in.

Thanks!

You do not need a passport to re-enter your own home country but you do need a birth certificate. The passports into the U.S. are for people from other countries i.e. Canada. However with the changes a Canadian does not require a passport to enter the U.S. by car and won’t need it until June of 2008. Canadians however require a passport to enter the U.S. via air but this does not affect U.S. citizens.

I just read an article on this. Until summer of ‘08 you’ll be alright. But both of you have to be citizens of the United States. If you have American birth certificates and all that you’ll be fine, but if one of you is from somewhere else and your status isn’t clear in the U.S. just stay there. Bring I.D. and proof of citizenship. You should have no problem.

Currently, you do not need a passport to go into Canada or come back into the US by auto. You need a valid picture ID and a certified copy of a birth certificate. YOu will need the passport next year.

I live about 5 minutes away from a bridge to Canada and all that I have ever needed was my license. Half the time they don’t even look at it anyways.

    Hello,
I’m not trying to come off rude sounding here but this question is similar to 41 others that are asked on a regular day!
So just go back and check on questions that or similar to your asked here. Then go to the passport site.(This is like a broken record over & over again.)
    Good luck.
I found a site that will answer all your passport, enteries in to Canada.

You do not require a passport to drive or bus across the border to canada or return to the U.S. until sometime next summer ( they haven’t put an exact deadline yet ) In august you will both be fine with just driver licence/birth certificate. If you were flying that is a whole different story, then you would need passports to return to the U.S.

    Hi Dorkyncool,

My name is Rumen, I work at a private Canadian immigration firm. To answer your question, as long as your driving, you do not need a passport to enter Canada or the US. You will need your birth certificate and a valid state ID to cross the border.

The passport requirement was originally set to come into play at the end of January, 2008 but has been extended for now. Your boyfriend won’t need a passport to enter Canada for now.
