“Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen born in Syria in 1970, came to Canada in 1987. On a stopover in New York as he was returning to Canada from a vacation in Tunisia in September 2002, U.S. officials detained Arar, claiming he has links to al-Qaeda, and deported him to Syria, even though he was carrying a Canadian passport.”
“Prime Minister Stephen Harper issues a formal apology to Maher Arar while announcing Arar will receive $12.5 million in compensation.
The package includes $10.5 million for pain and suffering, and another $2 million for Arar’s legal fees.
“I sincerely hope that these words and actions will help you and your family begin a new chapter in your lives,” says Harper.
The prime minister reveals Canada has sent letters to the U.S. and Syria to protest Arar’s treatment. ”
“Dec. 21, 2006
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice promises U.S. security officials will review Arar’s case. ”
THANK YOU REPUBLICANS, for making us American look like deranged lunatics with no manners or respect or hospitality for others.

“When Arar returned to Canada more than a year later, he said he had been tortured during his incarceration and accused American officials of sending him to Syria knowing that they practise torture.”
A majority of the hijackers in 9/11 crossed the Maine/Canada border, they were in Canada with papers.
If Arar had been a terrorist, what would you be complaining about? How negligent the republicans are to let a terrorist board a plane?
We, the United States, have played the role of World Police for far too long. We used to gather on the battlefield with a handpicked team of allies. After 9/11 we were still the world. Then we went into Iraq, and our backup starting going home. This we are doing alone. Remember when bin Laden was just an unpleasant side effect cause by that HUGE threat to National Security known as communism. Hey, at least we can all sleep tight tonight knowing that treat has been neutralized!
Wish I was LOL!
Yes, Bush and the GOP have damaged the American reputation around the world.
It makes it much more difficult as an American travelling overseas.
I, as a Canadian, wonder why our government would compensate this man knowing full well that the American government refuses to remove him from their list based on evidence they will not reveal. There appears to more to this story than we know. I am a bit skeptical of Arar and will be until the whole story comes out. I will not effect a definitive opinion in this matter based on one side of a story.
