Family Vacation Tip: Keep the Kids in Mind

Careful planning is essential when taking a trip with your family. For parents with younger children, it’s imperative to plan for the worst. Kids tend to get sick at inopportune moments, and vacation time is no exception. That’s why it’s always a good idea to pack cough syrup, aspirin, or any other common cold remedy to use at the first sign of illness.

If you and the family are flying, it’s often best to plan an early morning trip. There are a greater number of delays as the day goes on, which can increase the likelihood of children becoming antsy. Also, try to reserve aisle seats or seats near the bulkhead, which provide more leg room.

Planning the trip together with your children is also a way to ensure a smooth trip. Children, especially teenagers, will feel more involved with the vacation and likely cut down on complaints over the course of your trip.

Family Vacation Tip: Establish an Emergency Plan

Emergency planning is an often-overlooked, but key part of preparing for a family vacation. Before you embark on your trip, it’s good to go over with your children what to do in case of an emergency. Memorizing important numbers and addresses of where you’re staying can help prevent further complications in the case of separation, especially with young children.

Ideal Destinations for Family Vacations

When traveling with the family, it’s important to keep in mind that not all destinations are family-friendly. Some are more geared for adults while others are too kid-centric. Below are a few destinations that are great for mom, dad, and the kids. Read up about them and choose a family vacation destination the entire family will enjoy.

Family Vacation to London

Upon arrival in the English region of this massive island, it is important to include travel outside of London for the full British experience. England’s most southwestern tip of Cornwall is home to the legendary sea-cliffs below Penzance and the dramatic peninsula of Land’s End where a 25 mile trail will take you along some of the most beautiful stretches of ocean. Cornwall is also known for its architectural landmarks, including Cotehele, a most impressive Tudor mansion and museum along the river Tamar. Travel northeast to encounter ancient towns nestled in the picturesque countryside of The Cotswolds. This region is extremely popular for a glimpse into the idyllic English lifestyle with its 14th century stone and thatched roof cottages and cobblestone alleys. Keep in mind that the southern regions are heavily traveled in the months of July and August by locals and foreigners alike due to the warmer weather.
Family Vacation to Canada

The second largest country in the world should by no means stand in the shadow of its more boisterous southern neighbor. Canada’s 10 million square kilometers of land, lakes and life brings its own signature flavor to the North American continent. Travel through Canada is a truly mind-opening experience for even the most seasoned vacationer. Read more about family vacations to Canada and find discount airfare to Canada at http://www.cfares.com/canada/.

Family Vacation to Ireland

Most fascinating of Irish travel is the evidence of ancient Celtic civilization and their Viking invaders in the form of stone circles, monoliths and mounds. Burial mounds, known as Court Cairns and Tumuli, can be found all over the countryside. One such ruin in the Silvermines Mountains has lost its covering over time and the many stone chambers inside are now visible. The most impressive stone circle is The Lios in Limerick, which dates back to 2000 BCE and is given a distinctly eerie feel by the area’s abundant overgrowth and crooked trees. The giant circle is 150 feet in diameter and attached to a long stone-lined path that leads to two other smaller circles in the area.

cFares is the first choice thousands of knowledgeable travelers are using right now to save hundreds of dollars on low airfares. And that is exactly what corporate housing and furnished rentals. providers can help us with. Those companies offer fully furnished condo apartments in upscale condo buildings in some of the best areas of the city at a fraction of of a typical hotel room cost.

You can rent spacious designer decorated condo apartments that are more than double in size than typical 350 square feet hotel rooms and offer two separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a pull-out sofa bed in the living room, 2 TVs, and fully equipped kitchens from as low as $150 – $200.00 CAD a night for the whole family.

Do not forget that most Toronto furnished rentals include wireless internet, cable TV, unlimited local calls, and unlimited use of the in suite washer/dryer. Some of the nicest Toronto short term rental providers offer an assortment of water, soft drinks and juices and a gift basket with sweets and snacks upon arrival – so that you don’t have to run to the convenience store and buy $ 3.00 bottle of water and $ 5.00 bag of chips if the kids start the usual and infamous “I want a drink, I want some candy and chips, I want…”

Such suites (also known as corporate suites, executive suites and executive accommodations) offer more space, privacy, flexibility, and cost savings compared to conventional hotel accommodations. At the Toronto Hilton Internet access is $19.95 CAD plus taxes per night per computer, a bottle of in-room water is $6.00 plus taxes, local telephone calls are $1.00 each.

Furnished suites provide a comforting feeling of being at home and feature upscale and modern furniture, premium bedding and towels, and such little necessities as big screen Plasma LCD TV in the living room, second Plasma LCD TV in the master bedroom, DVD/VCR with remote, stereo system with CD, iPod/MP3 docking station with an alarm clock, cordless phone and a bedside radio alarm clock in each bedroom.

The major plus for most families and couples is a convenience of having a fully stocked kitchen with full size dishwasher, full size fridge, full size stove wit a built-in oven, microwave, toaster, tea kettle and coffee maker as well as dinnerware, cookware, silverware, glasses and numerous kitchen utensils. Coffee or tea in downtown Toronto can cost you between $1.30 (Canada’s Iconic Tim Horton’s Coffee) to over $6.00 (hand-mixed Starbucks creation).

Breakfast downtown Toronto for a family with 2 kids can cost anywhere from $35 to $70 CAD after taxes. If you get some basic breakfast supplies at a corner grocery store your breakfast would cost you $15-25 and you will save a ton of time as well!

Furnished suites include a full-size washer and dryer that you can use at no extra charge, iron, and an ironing board, built-in safe even such little things as hair dryers and bath scales.

While planning your next visit to Toronto save yourselves some money! Consider Toronto short-term rentals and spend the money that you save on shopping and on dining out.

Perhaps you have wondered about taking a RV vacation. It seems like fun and you’d like to try it, but you aren’t sure if it’s for you. Well, it’s a growing industry. As baby boomers take to the road, the RVing pastime and lifestyle are becoming increasingly popular. If you have a hint of the RV itch, then here are 10 common reasons for taking an RV vacation:

1. Getting Back to Nature: If you are interested in the great outdoors, an RV is a great way to vacation. You can visit state or national parks, tour famous landmarks and simply enjoy some fresh air and natural settings. Take a hike or go fishing. Try white water rafting or canoeing. Play some golf, go swimming, ride your bike. Get some exercise or simply do nothing but enjoy your surroundings.

2. The Comforts of Home: In an RV, you can have the best of both worlds. Enjoy the great outdoors with more creature comforts than tent camping. Whether you own an RV or try a rental, most RVs are well equipped. You will likely have a kitchen with microwave, fridge and stove, a TV and VCR, beds, living and dining areas and bathroom with shower. Many RVs have slide out rooms that increase the living area at the touch of a button. You can sit outside under your awning, get out of the rain if the weather changes, and turn on the air conditioner if it gets too hot.

3. Family Matters: Family members of all ages tend to connect with each other when they are away from their normal routine enjoying a simpler lifestyle. Remember that family togetherness can be a double-edged sword. While the RV is comfortable, it is a small living area for a large family. If you are renting, bear this in mind in choosing the size of your rental RV. During the day, try to spend time outdoors or in different activities, so that each family member gets a bit of personal space and time for themselves. But the minor logistics can be managed. The general consensus among RVing families is that an RV vacation tends to bring the family closer together with more communication and the sharing of good times.

4. Cool for Kids: An RV vacation can be a great way to travel with children. They can go out to play or take part in campground activities. There are likely to be other kids to meet and new places to explore. Children of all ages will enjoy an old-fashioned campfire complete with stories, songs and stargazing. And most kids think it\’s pretty cool to be in an RV “home on wheels”.

5. Campgrounds: There are many choices in campgrounds and RV parks. In peak season and tourist areas, you should make reservations. Look for the amenities that are important to you. Campgrounds may have swimming pools, lakes, boating, fishing ponds, miniature golf, playgrounds, hiking trails, game rooms, walking or bike paths, tennis courts and activities for kids and adults. You may find dances, barbeques, contests or other entertainment. RV Clubs are worth joining to get campground discounts and other services. Consider the size and setting of the campsites and check out overall campground ratings in campground directories. Also consider proximity to other attractions or landmarks that you want to visit.

6. Flexibility: In an RV, you have the flexibility to change locations if you get the whim. But take this with a grain of salt. For popular destinations, you may not be able to pick up and find another campground without a reservation. You also want to strike the right balance between seeing different areas, the amount of time spent driving and ensuring you have enough time to relax. Cautions aside, an RV can give you a lot of freedom and spontaneity. RV travel appeals to an inner pioneering spirit and allows you to create your own adventure as you go along your way. You can explore the country at your own pace or take off for last minute mini-vacations, tailgating events and weekend trips.

7. Affordability: The question of whether it is cheaper to take an RV vacation doesn’t have a “one size fits all” answer. The comparison really depends on the type of vacations you would take instead, as well as the way in which you plan to RV. For a one-time trip, you can compare the costs of renting a suitable RV to the costs of hotels, airfare or other means of travel. Or if you are considering regular RV vacations, you may want to purchase a motorhome or towable trailer. In this case, you would need to factor in operating costs, maintenance and the purchase price. In an RV, you can save money by cooking meals at home vs. dining out. You can minimize expenses if you take advantage of activities and amenities already included in the campground rate. Fuel expenses can be managed by reducing the distances traveled and staying longer at a given campground or park.

8. Driving the RV: Driving yourself gives you control over where you go and the pace of your travel. You don’t have the hassle of airline counters and keeping to schedules. You can stop and take a break when you choose. You don’t need a special license to drive an RV. Sure, it takes some getting used to — but the number of RVs on the road should tell you that it is doable. Practice on your own (or with one other person) before you load up your passengers. Take advantage of any classes available through your dealer or one of the many RV organizations.

9. How about a relaxing vacation for a change? How many times have you returned from a trip saying you need a vacation from the vacation? Now don\’t kid yourself – if you are the type who likes to schedule all the details of a trip, that’s not going to change simply because you are traveling in an RV. But in choosing an RV vacation, you may shift your thinking and be more apt to use your time off as an opportunity to truly relax and unwind.

10. Test out the RV Lifestyle: The RV vacation may serve as a test drive to gauge your overall interest in the RV lifestyle. There are RVers who spend several weeks per year in RV travel. Other RVers take off for months. Snowbirds are RVers who make an annual trek to warmer climates for the winter season. And then there are fulltime RVers whose only home is their RV. Many of these people started out by vacationing in an RV as a way to try out the RV lifestyle.

Beginning in the spring 2010, the Wii will become the last of the three current video game consoles. It will incorporate instant viewing of Netflix movies and television shows over the internet. Wii owners who have a broadband connection and a Netflix subscription will be able to watch those programs at no extra charge.

The Wii and Netflix will become a great joint venture. It will allow access to the living rooms of millions of new potential subscribers. It’s by far the most popular gaming console in the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix has been determined for a very long time to offer movie streaming on as many devices as possible. Letting subscribers watch movies over the internet has become an increasingly important service for Netflix.

For the few people who are unfamiliar with Wii, the console offers players a chance to play simulations of golf, bowling, boxing, tennis and baseball. Wii comes complete with two wireless controllers that have built-in motion sensors. Another sensor is positioned on top of the television and Wii players perform the same motions that they want their virtual player onscreen to execute.

Does Wii have the potential to sharpen sports skills? Playing the video games in order to sharpen real life sports skills isn’t a completely ridiculous idea. Obviously if you’ve never swung a golf club before, maybe it’ll help you to learn how to golf swing mechanically.

Avid Wii gamers claim that Wii can be used as a fitness tool? It’s ridiculous too think that flicking your wrist is considered exercising. Although the games on Wii is fun, if I wanted an actual workout I’d sign up for a work out program at a fitness center.

Video game playing isn’t generally associated with sports skills, exercising or physical activity, however in the age of Nintendo Wii this could be the case. Regardless of the legitimacy of these claims, Wii remains a very popular console and Nintendo has sold 1.5 million of these $249.99 systems to date.

Consequently, intensive Wii playing has led to numerous reported accidents. Wii related injuries and household damages. People have actually been reported and photographed with black eyes and bruises, broken ceiling lamps, smashed windows, broken television sets, Wii controllers stuck in walls, broken pottery, injured pets (including a cat who lost a tooth to a Wii controller) along with their accompanying stories.

Although there are still many people who view Wii as simply a means of fun family entertainment. Nintendo has undoubtedly revolutionized the way in which video games are played and perhaps even the sole purpose of playing them. Whenever a new console is about to be introduced in stores people will wait in long lines overnight, and say things like “I can’t wait to get my hands on it!”

History is clearly very important to Nintendo. Never has this been more apparent than for Nintendo’s Wii pronounced “we”, a machine that wants to revolutionize the way we play games forever!

A feature that will endear it to older players is the fact that once you’ve hooked your console up to broadband, you can download classic Nintendo and Sega games. The Wii is also backward compatible with the GameCube, which is good news for those who cherished that unloved square box.

Nintendo is hoping that this will attract friends and relatives, parents, younger brothers and sisters and put the Wii back into the hearts of fun family entertainment.

So will this be a real revolution? So after you’ve conquered Wii Sports, what else is there left to look forward to? After the relative failure of the old-fashioned GameCube, Nintendo is taking a huge leap of faith forward with the Wii.

If the game-makers at Nintendo can make imaginative use of its clever control system, it might be the breath of fresh air that gaming needs for the future. Pass the imaginary golf club.

Can Wii help improve your golf swing, or is it just fun family entertainment? What else can the partnership between Nintendo and Netflix create in products?

With today’s busy lives, it is especially important for families to get away from it all, together. Children do not preclude a great vacation. In fact, if planned correctly, a family vacation can be the glue that makes a family stronger.

The trick is finding the right family vacation for your family. Can you imagine showing up at a great resort with your children – only to find the resort does not offer anything special for youngsters? Within a day, the kids will be bored, the adults will be frustrated, and your vision of a special family vacation will be up in smoke.

Planned correctly, and with the help of a travel consultant, you can find the right trip for your family. A consultant can help you find a place where someone has thought of your children’s needs, as well as your own. Today, that could be a cruise, an international resort or a domestic destination. The common denominator is that someone thought about what makes children happy – like age-appropriate activities – and what meets parents’ needs – like a babysitting service or child-friendly menus.

Adventure

Before you call a travel consultant, you need to think about what kind of vacation would interest your entire family. If you have a baby, an adventure vacation is probably not a good choice. But if you have older children or teens, an adventure vacation might be just the ticket to keep everyone engaged. Imagine hiking down a 10,000-foot-high volcano on Maui, or taking a helicopter tour of the islands of Hawaii. Got a young saltwater fisherman? Spend a day out on the water going for a big catch.

If you are looking for something more exotic, consider the islands of the Caribbean. St. Lucia features mountains, waterfalls and a drive-in volcano. In St. Kitts, you can visit a rainforest filled with monkeys and wildlife. Try scuba diving or snorkeling for a close-up look at sea creatures that your children have only read about.

You might also consider a visit to Canada where you can take the family whale watching in New Brunswick, or walk the Viking trail of Leif Erikson in Newfoundland.

Historical

When your children have a few history classes behind them, it is time to consider a historical trip to some of the places they have studied in school. Europe is rich in history – from the medieval city of Brussels, Belgium, to the castles and towers of London and the ancient ruins in Rome. History will never be the same! Or go south to Mexico, where you can climb an ancient pyramid, or Puerto Rico where you can visit ancient cathedrals, forts and plazas in Old San Juan.

And do not forget about the historic sites of the United States. They may not be as old as those in Europe, but American children probably know more about them. Philadelphia, Pa., is home to Independence Hall, where the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence; as well as the Liberty Bell and Valley Forge Park, where then General George Washington encamped one winter with his troops. A little further north and you’ll be in New York City, the city that never sleeps and is home to Broadway, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty

Quick getaways

Scheduling a family vacation can be complicated, especially if you want to avoid pulling the children out of school. Sometimes it is easier to schedule a quick getaway over a long weekend. You may feel obligated to pack a lot into three or four days, but the kids will never get bored!

Las Vegas, Nev., is more than a gambling town these days. It is an oasis on the desert that offers fabulous hotels and family friendly attractions. Great package deals are available that make it an affordable option. A simple walk down the Las Vegas strip will give your children a chance to see a battle aboard a pirate ship; big cats – like tigers, panthers and leopards; and more than 1,200 species of sharks and other saltwater fish.

You might want to consider visiting the U.S.’s neighbor to the north, Canada. For a little taste of France, visit Quebec City. Or cross the border between New York and Canada and visit the magnificent Niagara Falls. It may sound like a honeymoon locale, but there are plenty of family activities, excursions and attractions there, too.

And definitely put Washington, D.C., on your list. The nation’s capital is full of interesting and affordable attractions. Start by walking by the White House or visiting for free any of the 19 Smithsonian museums, including the National Zoo. Tour the monuments on the National Mall like the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. The public transportation system, the Metro, is clean and inexpensive. And you will often find the city deserted on the weekends, so hotel rates are down and parking is available.

Having a family definitely does not mean the end of vacations. If anything, it is the start of something new and exciting. As you show the world to your children, you can see it through their eyes.

I am stationed in Alaska and I am deploying to Iraq in a few months. My family is going home to Illinois for an extended vacation while I am deployed. We are planning on traveling through Canada to get to the lower 48. Now, we know we don’t need passports but will the border patrol deny us because my husband has a felony. The felony is due to stealing less than $200 from a friend’s house but he was convicted shortly after turning 18 and the court wanted to make an example out of him. He only got 2 months with probation. He is now 29 and he has not been in any other trouble. Is there a way to figure out how to know before we drive to the border? This is our only option to get home we can’t fly because we need a vehicle at home and we can’t take the ferry because of timing and money.
I would think that the fact that I am military and stationed in Alaska, where there is only 2 ways to travel with household goods to the US and 1 is through Canada and the other way is by boat which is outrageously costly, should be considered by the bourder patrol. We don’t need a passport until June 1 2009. Does anyone know if it makes a difference if you are traveling through or vacationing? Everything we have read says it is case by case approval so how can we get approval without driving all the way to the bourder to find out.
OK, well I would like people to answer if they can help not if they have a dumb opinion. I know Canadian and US relations are not the best but I am not in charge of the US Border Patrol so don’t get an attitude about personal experiences with the US. I am just trying to get to Illinois from Alaska and I don’t have $5000 to spend on a ferry trip. A felony charge for something that should not have been a felony charge (because it was under $200 and actually it was $100 because another person was involved) should not keep us from using Canadian roads for 2 days. And entering US from Mexico is a little different. Did you just get treated like sh*t and still get to drive through the US or did you get turned away? Because maybe they were just having a bad day.
