Army trucks abandoned at the end of WWII in 1945 can be seen on the North CANOL Road. The road was built to support and service an oil pipeline from Norman Wells, NWT to Whitehorse, YT and runs 144 miles. The road ends near Macmillan Pass at the beginning of The Canol Heritage Trail, Canada’s most remote hiking adventure. There are no services on this road. For more detailed info check out this site: explorenorth.com From MacMillan Pass (mile 144) to Norman Wells, the North CANOL Road has been designated the “Canol Heritage Trail.” I turned around at the airstrip near MacMillan Pass due to fuel limitations but it is possible to for a 4X4 to go another 50 miles and motorcycles twice that distance. Beyond that, the river crossings are deep and that the trail has been almost obliterated. Numerous articles have been written. Here is just one: buddstanley.blogspot.com

There are many notable ski resorts in North America. According to a recent poll, the top 10 ski resorts in the world are: Aspen, Colorado; Cortina, Italy; Mont-Tremblant, Ontario; Stowe, Vermont; Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France; Banff, Canada; Vail, Colorado; Zermatt, Switzerland; Kitzbuhel, Austria; and Whistler, British Columbia.

Such a wide array of top-notch ski destinations is difficult to compete with. Reaching a position on the top-10 list is a feat in itself. Skiers from around the globe gave their input on these highly sought-after destinations. Six of the 10 are located in North America.

Aspen, Colorado has always been well-known as a favorite ski spot for the rich and famous. As new resorts open world-wide, Aspen remains one of the most visited resorts in the United States. It offers a variety of runs ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert. Hundreds of acres of terrain offer something for everyone.

Mont-Tremblant, Quebec opened in 1939 and was the second resort to open in North America. It was the first resort to open in Canada. Mont-Tremblant is only an hour away from Montreal, making it a great daytime or weekend getaway for anyone looking to escape the nine-to-five. One of the most charming aspects of a Mon-Tremblant ski holiday is the fact that the streets in the village have a pedestrian-only layout. Visitors can park their vehicle for the entire duration of their stay if they wish.

One of the most picturesque resorts in the United States is Stowe ski resort in Vermont. Stowe ranks number seven on the top-10 list. It boasts the longest vertical drop in the area. Conveniently located in Vermont, Stowe offers two ski areas; Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Spruce Peak backs up to Smugglers’ Notch’s terrain and features a unique lift-link to both resorts.

Banff, or Lake Louise, in Alberta Canada ranks number five on the top-10 list. The mountains around Lake Louise are some of the most scenic mountains in the world. The three different ski areas, Mystic Ridge, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise are roughly 31 miles apart. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise was also recently voted a must-stay resort in a popular men’s magazine.

Another great Colorado based resort is Vail. Vail offers about 5,300 acres of terrain ranging from beginner to expert. It is also home to the fastest high-speed detachable quads on one mountain. Skiing, along with museums, art galleries, dog sledding, hockey and other attractions make Vail an excellent family ski location. There is always something for everyone to do

Whistler Blackcomb, another North American resort, is ranked number one on the top-10 list. According to the poll, Whistler Blackcomb provides the best skiing in North America. It also provides the biggest vertical drop of any slope in North America. This revelation comes as no surprise to skiers who have enjoyed Whistler’s beauty and slopes for years. Crystal Lodge and Summit Lodge and Spa were voted must-stay resorts in the Lake Louise area.

The top-10 report states that Whistler has everything it takes to make a legendary resort. The resort offers over 100 restaurants to suit all tastes, cafe’s, international stores and rentals. Over the last 10 years, Whistler has been nominated for “World’s Greatest Ski Resort” and has held the title for “Best North American Ski Resort” by North Americans. It has been deemed the favorite international destination by Japanese skiers.

This was not a conclusive list of North American ski resorts. It was simply an overview of a few of the newest, oldest and best in North America as revealed by a recent poll in a popular men’s magazine.

From the Canadian Rockies to the Poconos, North America is home to many outstanding ski areas, all with unique attributes. It would be difficult to narrow down the choices to just a few, but here are some of the ones that are best known:

Killington

Located on the East coast, Killington provides many options for skier. In addition to the several intermediate and advanced level mountains, there is a beginner area that sees a lot of use. With amble lodging the resort attracts large groups, which, combined with the many pubs in the area, creates a lively atmosphere, something to consider when making your reservations.

Squaw Valley

Despite its reputation as the home of extreme skiing, Squaw Valley is actually a wonderful ski resort for skiers of all levels of experience. It offers a unique experience for novice skiers in that many of the lower level ski trails are located about halfway up the mountain. While many ski resorts cluster the beginner slopes at the bottom of the mountain, Squaw Valley allows less experienced riders the thrill of skiing higher up the mountain. When you are done skiing for the day, a quick tram ride down the hill takes you back to the resort.

Of course, if you are interested in extreme skiing, Squaw Valley is a great choice. There are a variety of runs down sheer drops, and you will have plenty of company in your madness. If you have never extreme skied before, but are interested in giving it a try, this is the place for lessons.

Snowbird

Close proximity to Salt Lake City makes Snowbird an easy resort to travel to. The area is known for lake-effect snow. Lake effect snow creates huge quantities of snow in areas that are susceptible to it, leaving nearby areas with a dusting or less. The winter of 2004 and spring of 2005 for instance, saw lake effect snows totaling over 600 inches through the winter. During that year, Snowbird had enough snow for skiing through the Independence Day holiday.

Snowbird is a huge resort, at 2,500 acres, with something for the advanced skier and the beginner alike. One unique trail at Snowbird allows the less experienced skier to ski the infamous Hidden Peak, taking a gentler decent, but covering the peak from top to the bottom.

What about off the trail amenities? Snowbird offers those as well. From a high end spa that boasts a roof top Jacuzzi to more affordable, but just as convenient condo-style lodging, Snowbird has something for everyone. If you need to cut your budget still more, Salt Lake City, a mere 30 miles away, offers an abundance of lodging options.

Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole covers 2,500 acres on two peaks. Backcountry enthusiasts can take advantage of the additional thousands of acreage that are available for skiing in the neighboring national park and forest lands. The trails at Jackson Hole range from beginner to double black diamonds, which include 20 foot jumps and narrow chutes. The base lodge at Jackson Hole has been recently updated and expanded.

Snowmass

This resort, located in Aspen, has a family friendly atmosphere. It also has a vertical drop of over 4,400 feet, which makes it the second longest drop in the United States. There is plenty of room to spread out at Snowmass, the area spreads across a large area, with a wide variety of terrain. Open, gently rolling slopes and steep gullies, as well as everything in between, will be waiting for you at Snowmass.

Taos, New Mexico

Taos, for the serious skier, is a must visit. The gorgeous downhill trails offer a variety of expert and intermediate trails. If you are a beginner, Taos has limited trails. After a day of skiing, a drive into the city of Taos for outstanding food and fabulous art.

Whistler and Blackcomb

These two well-know ski destinations are two mountains that combined their efforts into one ski resort. This area has a unique weather pattern, and it is not unusual for you to enter a lift in soaking rain, only to step off of the lift into brilliant sun and snow. Whistler and Blackcomb also have a unique ski trail design. There are an abundance of beginner trails on both mountains, but continuing up the mountain will find you facing some of the most extreme trails on this side of the Atlantic. Upcoming plans for the mountains also include a gondola that will make it possible for skiers to move from one peak to the other without heading down to the base and back up.

These are just some of the many wonderful ski resorts in North America. Whether you are on the West coast, East coast or Canada, there is a resort for you. Beginner, intermediate or advanced, there are trails at each of these resorts that will be a perfect fit.

Gaining respectful popularity throughout North Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada, the beautiful Frost Fire Mountain Alpine Ski Resort in northeast North Dakota. Frost Fire Ski Resort is a popular 25-acre alpine ski area for individuals and families, developing into one of the future generations of ski towns. Although this is not a large alpine ski resort, it is a great deal of fun, and perfect for family ski and snowboarding vacations. Located near Walhalla, the second oldest town in the state, picturesque present-day Pembina River Gorge gently winds its way from north of La Riviere, Manitoba, Canada, on downward to Langdon, North Dakota. Traveling by auto or bus, Frost Fire is seven miles west of Walhalla ND on Highway 55.

Considered a day-area ski slope, area statistics show that Frost Fire Mountain has an elevation of 1,346 feet and a vertical drop of 345 feet, with an annual snowfall of 240 inches. With a total availability of 3 lifts, the ski resort has two lifts consisting of 1 double and 1 triple chair, with one surface lift – a rope tow/T-bar; and has a 1,500 person lift capacity per hour. Ten ski trails are available for beginners, intermediates, and experts, while skiing and snowboarding guests each have separate terrain areas. Complete outfitting for all guests can be found for skiing, tubing, or snowboarding activities, with the option of private and group lessons available per hour, or a snowboarding lesson.

When the day is over, a pool and a hot tub can be found at the Super 8 in Morden MB, or a cozy Eagles Nest Bed & Breakfast can be found at Cavalier, ND. Either way, there are a number of motel accommodations in the surrounding areas, including the Walhalla Forestwood in Walhalla ND. There are many restaurants to choose from or you can eat at the Frost Fire Daylodge Cafeteria at the resort.

Several Canadian reviews refer to its low prices and excellent half-pipe. Almost all of the skiing visitors felt it was a wonderful place to learn how to ski, especially if you brought your family. The staff was friendly and was quick to wait on the, so they didn’t have to wait very long. You can buy your food and drinks there OR brown bag it with an excellent place to eat it at. Very few reviews on it were unfavorable, and everyone liked it for family.

If you are not too busy on the slopes, there are area antique shops to visit, or historical sites to see as well. To provide ski maintenance, Frost Fire Mountain Resort has precision stone grinding and base repair, along with ski tuning and waxing available overnight, or while you wait. This resort may be small, but based on skier ability, has everything a person can ask for. Why wait?
