West Coast vacation ideas? 7-10 day trip?

Usually we travel on the South/South East Coast, or we cruise the Caribbean. We are staying closer to home this year …i.e. in the USA. We’ve cruised the W, E, and S Caribbean so we are going to give that a break, since flights are so expensive and we’ve visited many of the islands already.
I was thinking of traveling on the West Coast, as we have never been (except for a quick business trip).
Any one have ideas of cities to visit and things to do? Thinking of visiting N. California, Oregon, Washington, maybe crossing over to Canada. I’ve always been fascinated with Alcatrez and San Francisco. I don’t know much about Oregon & Washington.
Other thoughts were visiting Southern California for a few days (my son really wants to visit LA), and then take a 4-7 day Mexican Riviera cruise.
The trip will be for myself, and my 16 year old son in June 09.
Any feedback on vacation ideas or destination cities would be appreciated. I’m pretty open as far as budget. Would like to stay around $2-3K if possible not including airfare & car rental.
Thanks
Okay if you start in San Francisco, Alcatraz is good, the Fisherman Wharf, China town Golden Gate the usually, Go Visit a winery going down the coast, the City of Carmel and Monterrey are both cool, ive stayed in both. That in NoCal, SoCal, LA is the place, coming down PCH, you hit Malibu, it everything you’ve heard bout it. Then you could hit Hollywood, look at the stars and stuff, or the Santa MOnica Pier, the theme parks like Universal and Disney is a little further south toward SD, don’t know if that will fill up your days.
i live in so cal, and i think if you come down here you should do disneyland for sure. if your son isn’t that into the disney thought, there is always Knotts berry farm. they have a more grown up group of rides and things to do. Also right around Knotts is all kinds of tourist type attractions. the wax museum, medieval times, and so forth. not to mention that Orange County is safer than LA.
LA has universal studios, and the surrounding universal city walk that’s pretty fun. also in long beach there is the aquarium of the pacific. and if you come to so cal in the summer you re going to have to go to the beach. in orange county i would recommend Huntington Beach. LA i would say manhattan beach, or venice.
Hey there! I live in southern Oregon about 45 min from the california boarder. Anytime we have family or friends visit from out of state we always take them to Crater Lake. It’s amazing!!
