Canada wanted to host a major golf event so the Royal Montreal Golf Club made a bid on the event and that bid was granted. The Royal Montreal Golf Club is the oldest continually operated golf club in North America having been founded in 1873. The event was created and organized by the PGA Tour at a time when golfing Presidents were quite prevalent and the tradition has endured. It is played on opposite years of the Ryder Cup.

President’s Cup named for the President of the USA, who at the time was a big golfer and golf fan (many Presidents have been golfers/golf fans, which also played a part in it), George Bush the elder.
